Historical Background
In 1952 Indian reserve number 9 was surrendered (sold) by KVC to Department of Indian Affairs. There were conditions in this surrender that the federal government did not live up to. KVC addressed the issue with the government through the Indian land claims which included a comprehensive and a specific claim by filing a “Specific Claim”.
After lengthy negotiations, an agreement was reached on how to compensate the Haisla Nation. The agreement that came out of those negotiations is what we call the “1993 Settlement”. Under the terms of that settlement The Haisla Nation received $430,000 in compensation. These monies were put away in the trust revenue account. It was also agreed that if the Haisla used these monies to purchase land in Haisla territory, the land would be converted into Reserve lands under the Addition to Reserves process.
Through negotiations with the then Alcan Smelters Inc. (now Riotinto Alcan) KVC proposed and purchased six parcels of land which Alcan owned. The 1993 Settlement monies were used to purchase these parcels and we are currently in the Addition to Reserves process. Map included.
Footnote: This is info only on the status of the ATR process. KVC has no plans for these lands as it is too early to begin Land Use
