Haisla pleased by RTA steps forward on Kitimat Modernization Project; Opportunities for community, good for entire region

Kitamaat Village, BC. Haisla Chief Councilor Dolores Pollard says Rio Tinto Alcan's August 5th announcement of increased construction activity and increased investment towards modernization of its Kitimat smelter is "great and important news for our community--and for everyone in Terrace-Kitimat."

"It is clear that this modernization is a strategic priority for RTA, as we see that the company has approved $578 million in total capital spending for the project to date, with this scheduled to be approved next year," says Chief Pollard.

"Both from the imminent construction activity announced two weeks ago and from this huge investment that is already planned for, there will be opportunities for members of our community to provide services and resources to RTA," say Pollard.

"There will be employment and opportunities for those in our community with the capacity and interest to take advantage of them," she says. As a Council, we are aware of the hard work needed to take advantage of what's in front of us but we're just as committed now as we were in the beginning"
Under the terms of that legacy agreement RTA is committed to including the Haisla in employment, training, and contracting opportunities.

"The Haisla people are important partners of Rio Tinto Alcan, not only as we move forward with the modernization project but for all time," says Paul Henning, Vice President BC Operations &Strategic Development Western Canada. "The Haisla RTA Legacy Agreement duly signed and celebrated on March 31st of this year is a serious commitment for our company and we have already embarked
on putting processes and policies in place, both on the Project and in the Operation to ensure that all of the obligations to the Haisla are honored", he adds.
