Recycling & Compost Resources

With the newly launched Curbside Recycling Program in place, the HNC Environment department is excited to provide valuable resources from Recycle BC.

Here are their "Bin Signage" and "Green Food Bin" information sheets, providing visuals to guide homeowners in their recycling efforts. We encourage homeowners to save as a helpful resource.

Additionally, Recycle BC offers a "Recycling Home Tour" on their website, taking you through each room to pinpoint recycling possibilities. Click the following link to explore further: "Recycling Home Tour."

The HNC Environment department is here to assist Kitamaat Village Residents with their recycling efforts. General recycling questions can be submitted via email to recycle@haisla.ca. Prefer to speak to someone in person? You can reach the Environment department at 250-639-9361, Extension 203.

Ya’uc’ / Hello Everyone!

March is Distracted Driving awareness month and we all play a role in making our roads safe.

Distracted Driving is the leading cause of crashes and injuries. If everyone avoided distractions while driving in BC, around 78 lives could be saved every year.

When it comes to driving:

-Don’t use your cellphone at a red light. The law applies even when you are stopped at a red light or in bumper-to-bumper traffic;

-Keep your hands free. Hands-free means a Bluetooth, wired headset or speakerphone that can be operated with one touch or voice commands;

-If you have a Learner’s (L) or Novice  licence, you are not allowed to use any electronic devices (like phone or GPS) behind the wheel, for any purpose, even in hands-free mode.

Every Distracted Driving ticket includes a fine of $368 and four driver penalty points.

Plan ahead to keep your focus on the road:

-Turn off your phone or notifications. Consider turning on “silent mode” or “do not disturb” when you first get into the car.

-Keep you phone out of sight and out of mind. Put it in a closed glove box or centre console before you start driving.

-Know where to go before you drive. Program your GPS before you start driving and pull over if you need to update directions.

-Driving will always require your full attention, so set yourself up for zero distractions before you start driving.

-Set realistic travel times and be mindful of rush hours and delays.

When you’re behind the wheel, please focus on the road. Police across BC will be ramping up enforcement to help keep us all safe.

Thank you everyone for doing your part in keeping our roadways safe.

In preparation of the upcoming Curbside Collection Program starting on March 11, 2024, the HNC Environment department delivered the following to each household in Kitamaat Village along with a 2024 Recycle Pick Up Calendar:

Spring 2024 will mark the end of the two year program, Community Economic Development Initiative (CEDI), between Haisla Nation Council (HNC) and the District of Kitimat. At the program start elected Haisla Chief Councillor Crystal Smith stated “I am pleased to participate in this important initiative with the District of Kitimat. We recognize that working together to address our economic challenges will strengthen our relationship."

Haisla Nation Council and the District of Kitimat recognized that long-term partnerships were anchored in a solid foundation, and the CEDI program opened the way for both communities to create economic and social advantages for all citizens.

With the two year mark on the horizon, HNC and the District of Kitimat reflect on the highlights of their collaboration. Click the link to read more: District of Kitimat, Haisla Nation Council mark nearly two years in CEDI program - District of Kitimat

In recent years, the Haisla Nation Council Environment department collaborated with the District of Kitimat to introduce a Curbside Recycling Program to Kitamaat Village. Near the end of 2023, a Municipal Services Agreement between the two parties was finalized. The program is scheduled to launch in the first week of March 2024. Leading up to the launch, the HNC Environment department has disseminated information to residents through social media, the monthly newsletter, door-to-door information sharing, and a recent Community engagement session. During the session, details were provided on the bins that would be distributed to each Kitamaat Village household and guidelines on recyclable items. For those unable to attend, a video recap of the session's key points has been made available.

If you have general questions about the recycling program please email recycle@haisla.ca.
